Discussion Sonic Heroes is a good game

No other 3d sonic captures the 2d asthetic so well, every stage looks amazing, sonic never looked and will never look as good, even unleashed and generations despite being more advanced, have a much worse art style,it was no stupid filler like fishing with some stupid fat cat or walking in a empty hub world,it dont have boring werewolf sessions, you can actually explore the stages, its not a linear corridor focused only in being fast like the boost games, theres no tacked on 2d stages that control like shit,it dont tries to be funny in every line like modern games, jun senoue tracks are all bangers, theres not a single bad song in the entire ost, even the genesis games dont sound as good, tomoya ohtani stuff is not as good, his tracks are really generic, just an all killer no filler gamer.

I have really, really wanted to like that game but it simply isn't fun.

- Slippery controls
- Long stages with two acts (mostly a retread for each team)
- Need to constantly switch between characters feeling like a one man band needing to switch between the guitar, bass, and drums to play a song.
- Basic enemies with health bars put a stop to any sense of speed as you can't just blaze through them but need to take out several just for the areas to let you through in stages.

And throw in the story being paper thin, I can't think of anything that would really make it a good game, personally.

It has charm, but I don't think it feels particularly good to play. The controls are really slippery and it's too easy to go flying off the stage accidentally. The stages themselves are way too long, and the enimies are damage sponges and simply unfun to fight.

I think it starts off strong with the first two levels, but by the time I get to the casino levels, I'm ready to turn it off and play something else.

Everything about that game is good except for the story and controls, which the latter kind of kills a game that had huge potential. The game controls really badly.

The art and designs are more in line with genesis era style, which is cool. But Heroes has all the flaws of adventure taken to the extreme. Controls are slippery, level design is spotty, lots of filler.

Hearing that Iizuka crunched these levels out with only one other person, almost working himself into the ground, it's impressive that it came out as good as it did. Just another example of Sega's long history of rushing out Sonic games.

I kinda like this game, but "all killer no filler" is just flat out wrong. It literally has you replaying the same set up levels like four times. Sonic Heroes is probably best appreciated as a rental where you just play Team Sonic's story (this is initially what I did, then I bought the game and played the other stories and was disappointed).

A guide on GameFAQs suggested playing through Team Rose for those who has never touched a 3D Sonic game, which I didn't so I went with them first. Therefore, my first experience is with them rather than the common Team Sonic, which is where a lot of the game's memories are usually expressed ("Look at all those Eggman's robots!"). I do agree that the game started out very strong because it has one of the best first zones, which is thematically different even by Sonic standards. The game itself dragged on too long at later stages, and I was surprised to see how often it can go past 10 minutes since there were a lot of padding.

It was overall a mixture of good times and tedium, I felt.

Thank you for reading.

It was alright back then. Weaker than adventure 2, and with some frustrating things like retreading stages several times as different characters; and yet it was definitely better than most things that came out after it.

Where's the music, OP?!

Sonic Heroes is a weird one. I don't like playing it, I don't like the downgraded plasticky artstyle SEGA made because of the PS2, I hated collecting all the A Rankings as a kid and I hated that it didn't have the Chao Garden but...

I, somehow, still got fond memories of it lol. Plus, that Metal Sonic design is just the perfect amount of 00s Edge for me.
